How to Deal With Your Bucket

I am going to use a quote… and it has a swear word in it. If that is not your thing… you may not want to read on…

Speech class, final examination… the exam was to come to class and be given a list of quotes that you have to choose from to do an improv speech on. EEEeeeek! Public speaking is already a pretty gnarly subject, but improv and not planning? Lucky for me, I don’t mind public speaking so when the sheet of 100 quotes was given to me, I decided to be brave. Check out the quote I chose below.

Sometimes life is a bucket of shit with the handle inside. -Unknown

I had fun improv-ing on this quote and the class did too. But why bring that up here? Believe it or not, I actually say this to people in therapy. Here is why it applies to so many people. If you are in therapy, it probably means that you are going through something really tough.

The idea is, that life happens and maybe we just got dealt the shit in the bucket or maybe we are totally responsible for the shit in the bucket scenario. Either way, things are going to get messy and they may be hard. You will have to pick up the weight of that bucket and decide what to do with it. You could leave it alone… but shit in a bucket usually doesn’t get better with time. You could circle around it and contemplate your future with the bucket…but who wants to think about shit in a bucket forever? You could have someone else clean up your mess… but you may just end up with shit in a bucket again.

In the end, I dare you to grab hold of your shit and take care of it. Wash out that bucket and promise yourself that you wont be in a situation where shit is in the bucket again… and if it is, because sometimes circumstances are out of our control… you certainly will take precautions to make sure that handle is on the outside.
