My career as a psychotherapist began mid-life after a series of personal losses and unexpected change. Life had been good for many years until the “seas of change” hit my shore. When the waters calmed and the sun came out, I found myself inspired to pursue a path in human service in order to help others traverse the storms that arise in the course of any human life. I believe that therapy is a gift, for the giver and for the receiver. I offer my clients a safe and accepting place to process their experiences, to work on overcoming challenges, to define and utilize their strengths, and to create effective, satisfying, peace-filled lives.

I am a Master’s level Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor. I have worked in a college counseling center, as a health and wellness coach and in an alcohol and substance abuse treatment center. I have worked extensively with domestic violence and trauma survivors.

My approach to therapy is holistic, strongly focused on the interplay of mind, body and spirit in healing and in maintaining a life that is personally satisfying. I utilize evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy which focuses on understanding how thoughts and beliefs can affect patterns of behavior and interfere with a person’s ability to function effectively.  Internal Family Systems, Polyvagal, and EMDR are interventions I use in my work with individuals who have experienced trauma and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder. I likewise work with clients to incorporate the use of complementary practices, including attention to diet, exercise, sleep, meditation and yoga into their daily routines.

In 2005 I learned and incorporated into my life a formal mindfulness practice known as Vipassana or “insight” meditation. I teach mindfulness and utilize mindfulness-based therapies both as a tool for healing and recovery as well as a mechanism for long-term well-being.

On a personal note…

I am a native of the State of Michigan and I spent seven glorious years living in Colorado where I attended graduate school and began my career in human service work. I have settled in Illinois to be close to my children and grandchildren. I am passionate about mindful living and balancing the needs of mind, body, and spirit in day-to-day living. I love hiking, spending time in nature and gardening. My favorite thing to do in my spare time is make all natural handmade soaps and body products.
